Walls that hold the slope, and drain behind it

Block, stone and poured walls built on a real footing with drainage rock and a drain line behind them, engineered where the height and the load require it.

How we approach it

Water is what pushes walls over

Soil behind a wall gets heavy when it is saturated, and that hydrostatic pressure is what fails most walls in this county. Every wall we build gets free-draining rock behind it, a filter fabric so fines do not clog the rock, and a perforated drain line taken somewhere useful.

Footings below grade, on compacted ground

The base course sits in a trench on compacted material, below finished grade, and level. A wall that starts out of level never gets better as it goes up, and a wall bearing on loose fill settles unevenly.

Engineering where it is required

Above a certain height, or with a surcharge such as a driveway or a structure above the wall, the design needs an engineer and the city needs a permit. We tell you when you are in that territory rather than building to the edge of it and hoping.

What we check before quoting

Height, what sits above and below the wall, how water currently moves across the slope, soil type, and whether the property line or a setback affects where the wall can go.

Drainage is the wall

Ask what fails a retaining wall and the answer is nearly always water. Saturated soil behind a wall is dramatically heavier than dry soil, and it exerts pressure the wall was never designed to take. That is why every wall we build has free-draining rock behind it, a filter fabric between the rock and the soil so fines cannot clog it, and a perforated drain line that actually goes somewhere, daylighted or tied into a drain system.

A wall built without that is a wall on a timer. It may stand for years and then lean, bulge or fail in a single wet winter. It is also the cheapest part of the job to skip and the most expensive thing to correct, because correcting it means taking the wall down.

Height, surcharge and when an engineer is required

Height alone is not the only trigger. A wall that has a driveway, a structure, a pool or a slope above it is carrying a surcharge, and that changes the design fundamentally even at modest heights. Most Orange County cities require engineered plans and a permit past a set height or with any surcharge, and each city runs its process differently.

We will tell you plainly when a project is in that territory. Building a tall or surcharged wall without engineering to avoid a permit is the kind of saving that becomes someone’s problem later, and if a wall like that fails it takes the hillside and whatever is on it.

Where we do this work

We take retaining wall jobs across Orange County, including Anaheim · Irvine · Huntington Beach · Mission Viejo · Fullerton, and into Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. The full list is on the service areas page.

What the work looks like on site

The trench is excavated below finished grade and the base is compacted, then a levelling pad of aggregate is placed and screeded dead level. The first course is set on that and checked in both directions, because every error in the base course multiplies as the wall goes up.

The wall is built up course by course with the block set, aligned and, where the design calls for it, grouted and reinforced with steel tied into the footing. Behind the wall goes free-draining rock, separated from the retained soil by filter fabric so silt cannot migrate in and clog it, and a perforated drain line at the base taken to daylight or into a drain system.

Backfill is placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped, because loose backfill settles and takes the surface above it down with it. Caps go on, the grade above and below is finished, and where a permit applies we schedule the inspections at the required stages rather than at the end.

After we finish

We walk the finished job with you before the final invoice rather than after it. Anything on the punch list gets cleared while the crew and the materials are still here, which is the cheapest and fastest time to deal with it.

You get whatever documentation the work generates: the plant list and irrigation schedule on a planting job, product details and warranty paperwork on turf, permit and inspection records where the work was permitted, and the specification of what went in the ground so a future contractor is not guessing.

Workmanship is warranted, and manufacturer warranties on materials such as turf and pavers pass to you. If something is not right, call us. We are a small local operation and our name is on work all over this county, which is a stronger incentive than any warranty document.

Questions about retaining wall

Do I need a permit?

Usually above a set height, and almost always if something is built above the wall or the wall carries a surcharge. Each city in the county handles it slightly differently. We pull permits and schedule the inspections where they are needed.

How long does a retaining wall last?

A properly drained wall on a good footing lasts decades. Walls that fail early nearly always failed because water had nowhere to go.

Can you build over an existing failing wall?

No, and anyone offering to is selling you a problem. If a wall is leaning, cracked or bulging, it comes out and the new wall gets its own footing.

What about the wall on the property line?

Property line walls need care and often a conversation with the neighbor. We check setbacks and will tell you what the city allows before we design it.

Block or poured concrete?

Segmental block is faster and handles curves well. Poured or CMU with a veneer gives you a more finished architectural face. Height and the look you want usually decide it.

Can a retaining wall double as seating?

Yes, and low walls around a patio are one of the best uses for one. Seat height and cap width get set for comfort.

How long does a wall take to build?

A short garden wall is a few days. A tall engineered wall with inspections at set stages takes considerably longer, because the schedule includes waiting on the inspector at the footing and reinforcement stages.

Can I plant on top of a retaining wall?

Yes, and it usually looks better than leaving the top bare. The planting has to be chosen so its roots and its watering do not work against the wall, which mostly means avoiding anything with aggressive roots directly behind it.

What is a surcharge?

Anything above the wall adding load beyond the soil itself: a driveway, a pool, a structure, or a slope continuing upward. Surcharge changes the engineering fundamentally, and a wall designed without accounting for it is a wall designed for the wrong job.
