Shade structures anchored to last

Pergolas and patio covers set on real footings, squared to the house, and sized to shade the part of the patio you actually sit on.

How we approach it

Footings sized for uplift, not just weight

A pergola is a sail. Wind lifts it as much as gravity holds it down, so the posts get anchored into footings designed for that, with the right hardware at the base rather than a bracket screwed to a slab.

Shade aimed where the sun is

Rafter direction and spacing decide when the structure actually shades. A pergola with rafters running the wrong way gives you stripes at noon and nothing at five. We work out the orientation before we set the posts.

Tied into the house properly

Attached covers need correct flashing and a ledger fixed into structure, not into stucco. Done badly, this is a water intrusion problem that shows up inside the house a year later.

The detail

Structure types

Free-standing pergolas, attached patio covers, shade sails on posts, and solid-roof covers where full shade and rain protection are wanted.

Detail that matters

Post spacing, beam depth, rafter spacing and tail profile, and whether the structure is stained, painted or left to weather.

Wind, uplift and how a pergola is anchored

A pergola behaves like a sail. The load that matters is not the weight of the structure pressing down, it is wind trying to lift it up and push it sideways. That is why post bases matter so much: a post anchored with the correct hardware into a footing designed for uplift behaves completely differently in a Santa Ana event than a post on a bracket surface-fixed to an existing slab.

Santa Ana winds are a real design consideration in this county, not a theoretical one. We size footings and select hardware with that in mind, and where a structure attaches to the house we make sure the ledger is fixed into framing rather than into stucco.

Rafter direction, spacing, and actual shade

A pergola only shades when the sun is at the right angle to its slats, which means rafter direction and spacing decide when it is useful. Rafters running one way give you deep shade at midday and stripes at five; running the other way reverses it. If the point of the structure is to make a west-facing patio usable at six in the evening, that has to be designed for, and sometimes the honest answer is that a slatted pergola will not do it and you want a solid cover or a sail.

We work out the orientation against how you intend to use the space before the posts go in the ground, because after that the geometry is fixed.

Where we do this work

We take pergola jobs across Orange County, including Anaheim · Irvine · Huntington Beach · Mission Viejo · Fullerton, and into Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. The full list is on the service areas page.

What the work looks like on site

Post positions are set out and checked square to the house and to each other, then footings are excavated to the depth and diameter the design requires and poured with the anchor hardware set in the wet concrete rather than drilled in afterwards. Those cure before anything is stood up.

Posts are set plumb and braced, beams are lifted and fixed, and rafters are cut and installed at the spacing worked out for the shade you want. Where the structure attaches to the house, the ledger is fixed into framing and flashed properly, which is the detail that keeps water out of the wall.

Any electrical for fans or lighting is run before the final trim goes on. The structure is then finished, stained, painted or left to weather as chosen, and where a permit applies the inspections are scheduled at the framing stage rather than after everything is closed up.

After we finish

We walk the finished job with you before the final invoice rather than after it. Anything on the punch list gets cleared while the crew and the materials are still here, which is the cheapest and fastest time to deal with it.

You get whatever documentation the work generates: the plant list and irrigation schedule on a planting job, product details and warranty paperwork on turf, permit and inspection records where the work was permitted, and the specification of what went in the ground so a future contractor is not guessing.

Workmanship is warranted, and manufacturer warranties on materials such as turf and pavers pass to you. If something is not right, call us. We are a small local operation and our name is on work all over this county, which is a stronger incentive than any warranty document.

Questions about pergola

Do I need a permit for a pergola?

Often, and it depends on size, whether it is attached to the house, and the city. We check before quoting and pull the permit where one is needed.

Will it give real shade?

A slatted pergola gives filtered shade that moves through the day, and rafter spacing controls how dense it is. If you want full shade at a fixed time, a solid cover or a sail is the better answer, and we will say so.

What material lasts longest here?

The dry climate is kind to timber if it is detailed to shed water and maintained. Aluminum needs less upkeep. Both are common and the choice is usually about how the structure should look against the house.

Can a pergola support a fan or lighting?

Yes, if it is planned before the beams go up. Running conduit afterwards means opening up what we just built.

Can it attach to an existing patio slab?

Sometimes. It depends on the slab thickness and what is under it. Often we core through and pour a proper footing below.

How long does one take?

A straightforward free-standing pergola is a short job once the footings have cured. Attached covers with a permit take longer because of the inspection schedule.

Can a pergola be enclosed later?

Sometimes, but it depends on how the structure was designed. If you think you may want to enclose it or add a solid roof later, tell us now, because sizing the posts and beams for that from the start is cheap and retrofitting it is not.

What about fire-resistant materials?

In higher fire hazard areas the material choice matters and there may be requirements on what can be built. We check the applicable rules for your address before designing the structure.

Do you build shade sails?

Yes. Sails need properly engineered anchor points because the loads at the corners are considerable, and posts for a sail are usually heavier than people expect.
