Turf that drains, and still looks like grass in August

Artificial grass installed over a proper base so it drains fast, sits flat, and does not go shiny or flat-matted after two summers.

How we approach it

The base decides everything

Turf is only as good as what is under it. We excavate, lay and compact a decomposed granite or crushed rock base, and screed it flat before a single roll comes off the truck. Turf laid on loose soil ripples within a year and there is no fixing it afterwards without pulling it up.

Drainage is designed, not assumed

Backing perforations are not a drainage plan on clay soil. We slope the base and add drain lines where the yard needs them, so a heavy December rain runs somewhere instead of standing under the turf and turning the base to mud.

Seams and edges you are not meant to see

Seams get glued and nailed on a proper seam tape with the blade direction matched, and edges are anchored into a hard border, bender board, concrete or masonry, so they never lift at the corner where the dog pulls at it.

The detail

Where turf earns its place

Front lawns that never get used but have to look sharp, dog runs, pool surrounds, shaded side yards where real grass will not grow, and putting areas.

Where we will tell you not to

Under a heavy tree canopy that drops constant debris, or on a slope with no way to anchor the top edge. In those spots we will suggest planting or hardscape instead.

Why base preparation is most of the price

When people compare turf quotes, the difference is almost never the turf. It is how much excavation and base material the number includes. A correct install here means removing several inches of existing soil, laying and compacting an aggregate base, screeding it flat, and only then rolling turf. That is most of the labor and most of the material cost, and it is entirely invisible once the job is done, which is exactly why it is the first thing a cheap bid cuts.

The failure mode is predictable. Turf on an under-prepared base looks perfect for a season, then develops low spots where feet travel, ripples along the seams, and puddles that sit for days after rain. None of that can be fixed from the top. The turf has to come up and the base has to be redone, which means paying for the same job twice.

Dogs, heat and the things people actually ask about

Two questions come up on nearly every turf call: will it stink if the dog uses it, and how hot does it get. On the first, the honest answer is that odour is a drainage and infill question, not a turf question. A base that drains and an infill that does not hold organic matter, rinsed occasionally, does not smell. A turf laid on compacted clay with nowhere for liquid to go absolutely will.

On heat: artificial turf in direct July sun runs hotter than living grass, and no product eliminates that. Lighter infill colors help, shade helps more, and a rinse before use cools it quickly. If a yard is in full west sun and the family is barefoot in it every afternoon, we will say so and talk about where real planting or a shade structure belongs in the plan.

Where we do this work

We take artificial turf installation jobs across Orange County, including Anaheim · Irvine · Huntington Beach · Mission Viejo · Fullerton, and into Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. The full list is on the service areas page.

What the work looks like on site

We strip the existing surface to the depth the design calls for and haul it away. If there is an irrigation system in the area it gets capped properly rather than cut and buried. Where drainage work is needed, the lines go in at this stage while the ground is open.

Base material is brought in, spread in layers and compacted with a plate or a roller depending on the area, then screeded flat and checked with a level and a straightedge. This is the slow part of the job and it is the part that determines whether the finished surface is still flat in five years. Bender board, concrete or masonry edging is set to hold the perimeter.

Turf is rolled out and left to relax so it loses the memory of the roll, then cut in, seamed with tape and adhesive with the blade direction matched across the seam, and anchored at the edges. Infill is brushed in and the pile is power-broomed up. We rinse it, walk it with you and check for any low spot before we call it done.

After we finish

We walk the finished job with you before the final invoice rather than after it. Anything on the punch list gets cleared while the crew and the materials are still here, which is the cheapest and fastest time to deal with it.

You get whatever documentation the work generates: the plant list and irrigation schedule on a planting job, product details and warranty paperwork on turf, permit and inspection records where the work was permitted, and the specification of what went in the ground so a future contractor is not guessing.

Workmanship is warranted, and manufacturer warranties on materials such as turf and pavers pass to you. If something is not right, call us. We are a small local operation and our name is on work all over this county, which is a stronger incentive than any warranty document.

Questions about artificial turf installation

Does it get hot?

In direct summer sun it runs warmer than real grass. Lighter infills and a rinse bring it down, and shade over part of the area helps a lot. It is the honest trade-off for never watering it again.

Is it alright for dogs?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people call us. We use a base and infill that drains quickly and does not hold odour, and we rinse-test it before handover. Dog runs get extra attention on drainage.

How long does it last?

Good product on a correct base runs a long time. Most manufacturers back their turf with a lengthy warranty. Failures we get called out to fix are almost always base problems, not the turf itself.

Will it look fake?

Product choice matters more than anything. Varied blade color, a thatch layer and a realistic pile height are what read as grass. We bring samples out and lay them in your yard in daylight before you choose.

Can you install it over existing concrete?

Yes, with a pad and the right drainage detail. That is common on patios and balconies.

What maintenance does it need?

Rinse it, brush the high-traffic lanes occasionally, and clear leaves. That is the whole list.

Can turf go on a slope?

Yes, with anchoring at the top edge and usually a hard border to hold the bottom. The steeper the slope the more the anchoring matters, and on a very steep bank we may suggest planting or a terrace instead.

What infill do you use?

It depends on the use. Dog areas get an infill chosen for drainage and odour control; a putting surface gets something that supports ball roll; a general lawn sits between the two. We will tell you what is going in and why.

How do you handle the transition to concrete or pavers?

The turf is cut in tight and anchored into the hard edge so there is no lip and nothing to catch a toe. That junction is where sloppy installs are most obvious, so it gets the time it needs.
