Pavers and walkways set on a base that holds

Paver patios, walkways, drives and borders built on a compacted base with proper edge restraint, so the surface stays flat and the joints stay tight.

How we approach it

Base depth matched to the load

A walkway and a driveway do not get the same base. Foot traffic sits on a shallower section than a drive that carries a truck. We dig to the depth the use requires and compact in lifts rather than dumping it all in one go and running a plate over the top.

Edge restraint on every edge

Pavers spread sideways when nothing holds them. Every free edge gets restraint, either a concrete haunch or a spiked restraint strip, before joint sand goes in. This is the single most common reason a paver job comes apart at the perimeter.

Joint sand that stays put

Polymeric sand, installed dry and set properly, keeps weeds and ants out of the joints and keeps the field locked together. Rushed installs skip the compaction pass that seats the sand and the joints wash out in the first winter.

The detail

Materials we work in

Concrete pavers, natural stone, poured concrete with paver banding, decomposed granite paths, and cobble or brick borders.

Layout comes first

We chalk the layout and walk it with you before cutting anything. Patio size gets set from the furniture you plan to put on it, not from a standard rectangle.

Base depth, and why quotes differ so much

Two paver quotes for the same patio can be far apart and both be honest, because they are describing different jobs. The variable is what is under the pavers: how deep the excavation goes, what aggregate is used, and whether it is compacted in layers or dumped and rolled once. A pedestrian patio and a driveway need genuinely different sections, and the driveway section costs more because it is more digging, more material and more compaction time.

Ask any bidder what base depth they are pricing and how they are compacting it. If the answer is vague, the number is not comparable to a number that includes a properly built section.

Edges, joints and the places hardscape fails

Paver work almost never fails in the middle of the field. It fails at the edges, where nothing restrains the units and they gradually spread, and at the joints, where sand washes out and the pattern loosens. Both are cheap to do right during installation and expensive to correct afterwards, because correcting them means lifting and relaying.

The third failure point is the transition where hardscape meets something else: a slab, a threshold, a drain. Those junctions need to be detailed deliberately, with a joint that allows for movement, or they crack along the seam within a couple of seasons.

Where we do this work

We take hardscaping jobs across Orange County, including Anaheim · Irvine · Huntington Beach · Mission Viejo · Fullerton, and into Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. The full list is on the service areas page.

What the work looks like on site

Excavation to the depth the use requires, which is deeper for a driveway than a walkway, then the sub-grade is compacted before any aggregate goes in. Any drainage that runs under the hardscape is installed at this point, along with sleeves for future lighting or gas, because putting them in later means cutting the surface.

Aggregate base goes down in lifts and each lift is compacted, then screeded to the fall the design requires. Bedding sand is screeded over that to a consistent depth, never used to correct an uneven base, which is the shortcut that produces a wavy patio.

Pavers are laid to the pattern from a chalked layout, cut in at the edges with a saw rather than snapped, and edge restraint is installed on every free edge. Polymeric sand is swept in dry, the field is compacted with a protective pad, sand is topped up and the surface is watered to set it. We sweep it clean and walk it with you.

After we finish

We walk the finished job with you before the final invoice rather than after it. Anything on the punch list gets cleared while the crew and the materials are still here, which is the cheapest and fastest time to deal with it.

You get whatever documentation the work generates: the plant list and irrigation schedule on a planting job, product details and warranty paperwork on turf, permit and inspection records where the work was permitted, and the specification of what went in the ground so a future contractor is not guessing.

Workmanship is warranted, and manufacturer warranties on materials such as turf and pavers pass to you. If something is not right, call us. We are a small local operation and our name is on work all over this county, which is a stronger incentive than any warranty document.

Questions about hardscaping

Pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers flex with ground movement and a damaged one can be lifted and swapped. Poured concrete is usually cheaper per square foot and gives you a clean uninterrupted surface. We use both and will tell you which suits the spot.

Will weeds come up through it?

Not from below if the base is right and the joints are filled properly. What does happen is seed landing on the surface and rooting in the joint sand. Polymeric sand and the occasional sweep handle that.

How long before I can use it?

A paver patio can usually be walked on the day it is finished. Poured concrete needs to cure, so that is longer, and we will give you the dates.

Can you match pavers on an existing patio?

Often. Manufacturers change lines over time so an exact match is not always available. If it is not, we will suggest a deliberate contrast band instead of a near-miss that reads as a mistake.

What about tree roots?

We look for them before quoting. Depending on the tree we route the hardscape around the root zone, use a root barrier, or recommend a flexible surface there.

Do you install drainage under hardscape?

Where the grade needs it, yes. Channel drains, area drains and a proper fall away from the house are all part of the same job.

Can you match an existing paver color?

Sometimes. Manufacturers discontinue and reformulate lines, and even the same product varies between production runs. Where an exact match is not available we suggest a deliberate contrast band, which reads as a design decision rather than a failed match.

How much fall does hardscape need?

Enough to move water away from the house and off the surface without being noticeable underfoot. We set it deliberately rather than leaving it flat and hoping, because standing water on pavers is what grows the algae that makes them slippery.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. Walkways, entries and parking-adjacent hardscape on commercial sites are within what we do, and the base specification is usually heavier because of the loading.
